Routing Library Materials Purchase Requests Gifts to the Library

Routing Library Materials

Journals and newsletters from the library collection may be routed to one or more full-time faculty members on request. After routing, the material is returned to the library for shelving.

If more than one faculty member requests the same publication, new issues are routed in the order the requests were received. The library staff cannot ensure that materials, once routed, will be sent to the next recipient or returned to the collection in a timely manner. We will attempt to assist you in resolving problems.

To arrange for routing, or to stop or suspend an existing routing, contact your Library Liaison or Mary Strouse at ext. 5547.

Purchase Requests

Within the limits of its collection development budget, the library makes every effort to acquire materials requested by faculty. Library procedures for filling requests depend on whether the material is needed for course reserve or individual office use, or is recommended for the library's general collection.

Course Reserve Faculty Office Library Collection

Purchases for Course Reserve

The Library purchases materials for use in a particular course and/or for placement on course reserve. Generally, materials will be purchased only if they are needed for long-term use. All course reserve purchases are subject to the Library collection development policy and budgetary constraints.

Your Library Liaison can assist you in identifying appropriate materials for course reserve. To request a purchase, contact the Acquisitions Librarian, Dr. Lynn Monkres at ext. 5136.

When requesting course materials, please tell us:

  • you need rush delivery,
  • you wish to be notified when the book arrives, or
  • if it should be checked out to you on arrival.
  • If the book is to be placed on course reserve immediately, please tell us the name of the course.

Books and Subscriptions for Office Use

The Library can assist faculty in identifying and obtaining books and subscriptions for office use. Materials purchased by the library for office use are charged to the faculty member's research account. All faculty purchases are subject to Library budgetary constraints.

To request a purchase, to check the status of an existing request, or to obtain information on price, availability and supplements, contact the Acquisitions Librarian, Dr. Lynn Monkres at ext. 5136. Your Library Liaison can also assist you in identifying materials to support your research. Faculty orders are normally available in two weeks and are delivered to your mailbox. Rush delivery is available on request.

Faculty must return all library-purchased books and subscriptions to the library collection upon leaving the University. To assist in identifying library-purchased material, a single DuFour Law Library property stamp is placed on the inside cover or opposite the title page. Faculty books are otherwise unmarked.

Faculty subscriptions are typically mailed directly to your office. Unless requested to do so, the library will not recieve looseleafs or periodicals and thus will not have a record of receipt. However, we will attempt to assist you in resolving delivery problems. The library does not file looseleaf services housed in faculty offices. Please contact Mary Strouse at ext. 5547 for assistance with office subscriptions.

Recommending Items for the Library Collection

Faculty may recommend books and periodicals for the Library's general collection. All purchase decisions are subject to the library collection development policy and budgetary constraints.

Recommendations may be submited via Columbo's Recommendation form, through your Library Liaison, or directly to the Acquisitions Librarian, Dr. Lynn Monkres at ext. 5136. When recommending a publication, please supply as much of the publication information as you have. It can also be helpful to tell us where you came across the book or citation.

    Gifts to the Library

The library staff assists book donors, on request, by preparing an itemized receipt. The Library cannot provide valuations for tax purposes. To make a donation of published materials and arrange for a receipt, please contact the Director's Assistant, Ms. Judy Ann Blower at ext. 4460.

The disposition of all donated material is subject to the library's collection development policy. A donor notation is made in the library's catalog. Book plates are also available on request. Materials originally purchased by the library will not be treated as donations.
