What is interlibrary loan?
Interlibrary
loan (ILL) is a service that allows CUA law faculty,
students and staff to borrow materials from other
libraries when those materials are not available
at the DuFour Law Library.
Who
can request an interlibrary loan?
ILL
service is available to current CUA Law students,
faculty, and staff.
Before
submitting a request
Before
placing an ILL request, please check the following
resources:
- Columbo,
DuFour Law Library's online catalog.
- Aladin,
the online catalog for CUA's Mullen Library
and The Washington
Research Library Consortium (WRLC), a consortium
of local university libraries.
- Items
that are available from CUA Mullen library
may be borrowed using your CUA I.D. The
DuFour Law Library does not accept ILL requests
for items that are available at Mullen Library.
- Items that are available at WRLC libraries
other than CUA may be borrowed in person
or by using the Consortium
Loan Service (CLS). The DuFour Law Library
will accept ILL request
for items located at WRLC libraries (other
than CUA), but you will receive your materials
faster (3 - 5 business days) if you borrow
them via the Consortium Loan Service.
- Online
Journal Finder (includes full-text articles
on Westlaw, Lexis, HeinOnline (pdf), and other
journal databases).
How
to submit a request
Requests can be made online,
in person at the circulation desk, or via e-mail
(sobol@law.edu)
Turnaround time
for requested materials to arrive
Materials are sent via US
mail and generally take 2 weeks to arrive. Materials
borrowed outside the D.C. area may take longer.
Requestors will be notified via e-mail when an
ILL has been received. ILLs can be picked up at
the Circulation Desk.
ILL fees
We make every effort to
borrow from libraries that do not charge. In the
event that we cannot obtain an item without incurring
a fee, the library will pay up to $20.00 for a
request. This is at the discretion of the library
administration and is subject to change at any
time.
The law library does not
pay for lost or damaged materials. The cost for
replacement of lost or damaged materials will
be billed to the requestor. Please be
aware that the lending library determines the
cost of replacing an item and that these costs
can be considerable.
Due dates, renewals
& returns
All materials must be returned by the due date.
Materials may not be renewed online. Please contact
the circulation
department to request a renewal. Renewal requests
should be placed prior to the due date.
Please note that the lending
library sets the due date and the length of renewals
(if the lending library allows renewals). Failure
to return items by their due date jeopardizes
the law library's ILL relationships with lending
libraries.
Copyright
The copyright law of the United States (Title
17, United States Code), governs the making of
photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted
material. Under certain conditions specified in
the law, libraries and archives are authorized
to furnish a photo- copy or other reproduction.
One of these specified conditions is that the
photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used
for any purpose other than private study, scholarship,
or research." If a user makes a request for,
or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for
purposes in excess of "fair use," that
user may be liable for copyright infringement.
This institution reserves the right to refuse
to accept a copying order, if, in its judgment,
fulfillment of the order would involve violation
of copyright law.
